To calculate total work hours for a payroll period or timesheet:

Convert Shift Times to Total Elapsed Minutes: Subtract the start time from the end time (e.g., 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM = 8 hours / 480 minutes).
Deduct Unpaid Breaks: Subtract lunch and designated unpaid rest breaks (e.g., 480 min − 30 min break = 450 worked minutes = 7.5 decimal hours).
Aggregate Weekly Hours: Sum all shifts across the pay period.
Apply Overtime Rates: Hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week (or daily overtime rules depending on jurisdiction) are multiplied by 1.5× your base hourly rate.
