Direct answer: Most major Canadian retailers offer two distinct protections: Competitor Price Matching at the time of purchase (matching an identical in-stock model from an authorized Canadian dealer—with Home Depot Canada beating it by 10% on eligible items) and Post-Purchase Price Adjustments if the store drops its own price within 14 to 30 days of your receipt. In addition, under Canada's voluntary Scanner Price Accuracy Code, if an unpriced item scans higher than the shelf label at a participating store, you get the item free (up to $10) or $10 off the corrected price.

How the $10 Scanner Price Accuracy Code works in Canada
Administered by the Retail Council of Canada and endorsed by the Competition Bureau Canada, the Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code applies at thousands of participating grocery, pharmacy, and big-box locations across Canada (and is mandatory law in Quebec under the Office de la protection du consommateur with a $15 threshold as of 2025):
- If the item's correct shelf price is $10.00 or less: And the register scans a higher price on an item without an individual price tag (UPC barcode scan), the cashier must give you the first item completely FREE ($0.00), and any additional identical items at the correct shelf price.
- If the item's correct shelf price is over $10.00: The store must lower the price to the correct shelf tag AND deduct $10.00 off the corrected price before tax.
- Exclusions: The Scanner Code applies only to universal barcode (UPC/PLU) items without individual price stickers where the shelf tag had not yet expired.
How to calculate unit price per 100g vs bulk club packs
Primary sources: Competition Bureau Canada: Scanner price accuracy and unit pricing; CRA: GST/HST rates.
Retail "family packs" and warehouse multi-packs frequently experience shrinkflation—where a 900g package shrinks to 750g while keeping the same shelf price—or cost more per 100 grams than a smaller package on sale:
| Package Option | Shelf Price | Net Weight / Volume | Standardized Cost per 100g | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grocery Store Sale Pack (Coffee Beans) | $11.99 | 400 g | ($11.99 ÷ 400) × 100 = $3.00 / 100g | 12.3% Cheaper per gram |
| "Value Size" Club Tin (Coffee Beans) | $31.49 | 920 g | ($31.49 ÷ 920) × 100 = $3.42 / 100g | Costs $0.42 more per 100g despite bulk label |
Use our Unit Price & Shrinkflation Calculator on your phone in the aisle to convert grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, millilitres, and litres into a single standardized cost per 100g or 100mL.
Methodology and limitations
Scanner accuracy rules follow the Competition Bureau Canada guidance on the Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code and Quebec's Consumer Protection Act (Price Accuracy Policy). Retailer price-match and price-adjustment windows reflect published store policies as of 2026 and are subject to blackout dates during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Boxing Week. Store policies may change without notice; always verify the retailer's current terms at the customer service desk. Verified October 25, 2026.
