Official technical limits and algorithm engagement sweet spots (2026) across publishing channels.
| Platform / Channel | Hard Limit | Engagement Sweet Spot | Truncation / Fold Point | Strategic Optimization Advice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| X / Twitter Post | 280 characters | 70 – 120 chars | No fold (shows in full) | Shorter tweets receive 17% higher engagement and easier quote-tweeting. URLs consume 23 characters automatically. |
| LinkedIn Post / Feed | 3,000 characters | 900 – 1,500 chars | ~210 chars (3 lines) | The hook must deliver value before the "...see more" cutoff. Dwell time increases when readers expand the post. |
| Google Search Title | 600 pixels (~60 chars) | 50 – 58 chars | Truncates at ~600px | Place primary search query near the beginning. Characters with wide glyphs (W, M) take more pixel space than (I, L). |
| Google Meta Description | 960 pixels (~160 chars) | 140 – 155 chars | Truncates at ~960px (mobile ~680px) | Write a compelling direct answer with a clear call-to-action to maximize search engine result click-through rate (CTR). |
| Instagram Caption | 2,200 characters | 125 – 150 chars (or 1,000+ microblog) | 125 chars (1-2 lines) | First 125 characters appear below the image in the feed before "... more". Hook readers immediately. |
| College Admissions Essay (Common App) | 650 words (250 min) | 550 – 640 words | Hard submission lockout at 650 | Aim for 600 words to demonstrate depth without running into the strict system cutoff box. |
Character counts here measure raw text length, not each platform's own counting rules -- X/Twitter, for instance, weights CJK characters and some emoji differently than plain Latin text, so a post that fits under 280 here can still be flagged as too long on the platform itself. Reading and speaking times use fixed averages (225 and 130 words/minute) and don't adjust for text complexity or language.
