It cannot prove ownership, lien status, accident history, odometer accuracy or complete Canadian recall repair status by itself.

How to read a 17-character VIN

Current model-year codes
For common 2010-2030 North American VINs, the 10th character uses this sequence. The letters I, O, Q, U and Z are not used for model-year coding.

- Decode the VIN before visiting: make sure the year, make and vehicle type are plausible.
- Check the physical VIN: compare the dashboard, door label and paperwork character by character.
- Search Canadian recalls: use Transport Canada and the manufacturer's Canadian VIN lookup.
- Check history and liens: use provincial documents and vehicle history reports before paying.
- Pause on mismatches: a VIN typo can be innocent, but mismatched plates and documents are not something to wave away.
Common mistakes
- Assuming NHTSA equals Canada: NHTSA data is useful, but Canadian recall campaigns can differ.
- Trusting only the seller's screenshot: run the VIN yourself and compare the physical vehicle.
- Over-reading the plant code: position 11 is manufacturer-defined; use NHTSA or manufacturer data where available.
- Treating a valid VIN as a clean history report: a valid check digit does not clear liens, accident history or odometer risk.
